Hania Rani and Sir John Akomfrah: An Extraordinary Encounter to Open the 25th Fotofestiwal, Poland
1 June 2026
From 19 – 22 June, Fotofestiwal will present an audio-visual installation at the historic Art Nouveau power station of Karol Wilhelm Scheibler in Łódź’s Fuzja. The installation features Sir John Akomfrah’s work, previously presented at the British Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, accompanied by music composed by Hania Rani in response to the film.
Listening All Night To The Rain is an allegorical journey through history, touching on themes of exclusion and injustice. The film was created from archival footage complemented by contemporary sequences. Sir John Akomfrah is one of the most significant contemporary artists working today. His works — exploring memory, postcolonialism and the experiences of diasporas — have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Tate in London. He is a co-founder of the Black Audio Film Collective (1982–1998) and a recipient of the Artes Mundi award (2017). He was also awarded a knighthood for his services to the arts.
Hania Rani is one of the most internationally acclaimed Polish artists of her generation. She is a recipient of the Polityka Passport Award, a double Fryderyk Award winner in the categories of Artist of the Year and Producer of the Year, and a European Film Award laureate for her score to the film Sentimental Value. Her music has captivated audiences worldwide — from the Sydney Opera House to the Berlin Philharmonie.
